Ishiza is a bird and Maia's animal companion.
Background[ | ]
A fascinating bird of prey in striking red and blue, Ishiza accompanies Maia and is a particularly stubborn creature. He wound up as her partner after she won a shooting competition and received the freedom to pick any of the royal warbirds she desired. One particular red-and-blue creature kicked a hawk off her arm just to have her all to himself and the two were inseparable ever since.
Ishiza has an amazing personality and communicates with body language and looking in particular ways. One of those is cocking his head with eyes full of friendly recognition and murderous calculation, which means "I'm hungry and you're wasting my time". Typically precedes solving that problem by eating something. Hopefully not the interlocutor. He is also very particular about people and didn't take a liking to Maia's brother. The so-called White Flood resulted in Kana keeping his distance from the bird ever since - and having to invest in a new turban.
There's one other wrinkle to Ishiza: The bird is also an intermediary for Hylea to spy on the Watcher and the crew of The Defiant.

- As long as Maia is in the party, Edér will take a particular liking to the bird. Upon the first conversation, he will play with the bird, trying to get him to mimic his movements and wind up making a fool of himself before Maia.
