What isn't wrong is the real question. A whole district of walking, flesh-eating corpses. We sealed the area two months ago, just after I lost one of my finest commanders there. And yet this is the second guard rotation to disappear.
~ Wyla, when asked what's wrong with the district

Heritage Hill is a district of Defiance Bay in Pillars of Eternity.

Background[ | ]

Once one of the most prestigious districts, Heritage Hill has been under quarantine for two months by the time the Watcher arrives in Defiance Bay. Crucible Knight Wyla, who trains Novitiates at their keep in First Fires, has sealed it off as its inhabitants have become mad and started to eat each other. Since then, many visitors to the district and even guards have gone missing, and rumors circulate about the undead and unspeakable horrors.[1]

Indeed, when the Watcher has gained admission and enters Heritage Hill, he encounters all sorts of undead, streets abandoned by their inhabitants, the curbs adorned with corpses, many signs of destruction and an oppressiveness, reminiscent of Gilded Vale.[2]

Note: If you want to have all possible options available for all quests here besides Missing Sentries, you should not enter the Tower, Icantha's House or Valtas Manor before you've got a lead to Heritage Hill.
  • The entire district is one large war zone. After gaining access (Might 18, Copper pands (cp)1,000, a key - looted from the Justiciar nearby, or with Missing Sentries active), you will keep fighting undead every step of the way, starting with the abandoned house right behind the gate. To the north lies the cemetery, with a winding alley that leads to a small plaza with a defaced statue of Admeth Hadret. You can pick the vaults on the way and loot the remnants of the dead for a Spellward Amulet and coin. A mausoleum lies next to the plaza to the north, with the unique Valtas Mausoleum to the south-east.
  • Along the center of the upper edge of the map lies Valtas Manor, with Icantha's House in the northeastern corner. Finally, the Tower is found in the south-west corner.
  • Four backer memorials are located in the exterior graveyard area, and a further three can be found in the interior mausoleum areas.

Behind the scenes[ | ]

  • This area contains a short developer commentary, triggered after passing through the main gate.
There's a lot of walking and talking in Defiance Bay, so it's nice to break up things with a district where things just want to eat you.
