Hearth orlans are a sub-race of orlans in Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Orlans themselves prefer the term meadow orlan or meadow kin.[1]

Origin and prevalence[ | ]

"Hearth" orlans originated from the same place as their "wild" kin: the forested parts of the continent to the north of Readceras. While the wild orlans have stayed deep in the forests and jungles of the continent, hearth orlans progressively moved closer to lands settled by other races and established semi-permanent communities.

Appearance and culture[ | ]

Hearth orlans have a thinner coat of fur and are notably less hairy than wild orlans, and generally more accepted by other races because of it.[2] They have tufts of hair on the ears, but otherwise their face is covered with hair much like a typical human. [3]

Culturally, they tend to be much more sedentary in nature than their wild counterparts.

From the Pillars of Eternity Guidebook: Volume One:

  • Features: Enormous, fur-lined (on the back) ears. Small or narrow, often upturned noses. Round or heart-shaped faces. Narrow or almond eyes. Deep-set eyes and very prominent brows.
  • Skin: Two-toned, often light tan and a darker tan or brown. The tone division generally follows a "line" around the body and is more or less symmetrical outside of the "edge" between the two. Orlan skin often has a green or yellowish undertone to it. Orlan skin that appears to be "bare" always has a surprisingly thick coat of transparent hair on it.
  • Hair: Strawberry blond, red, orange, blue-green, green, green-brown, brown, black. Coarse and thick, wavy, or curly texture. It covers about 50% of their body and can go through a variety of gradations.
  • Eyes: Large irises with cat-slit pupils. Almond, round, or upturned eyes. Blue, green, gold, yellow, silver, violet, hazel.

In-game description[ | ]

In Readceras and the Vailian Republics, hearth orlans are often found as slaves. In the Dyrwood this is not officially the case thanks to a treaty with Eir Glanfath, but finding hearth orlans in indentured servitude is not unusual.

Hearth orlans are found in many forested areas of the Eastern Reach (where they originated) and occasionally as slaves both there and in the Old Empires. Distinguished from wild orlans by their less hirsute faces and bodies, hearth orlans generally receive a less negative reception from other kith. While they can be found in the Deadfire, they are seldom seen in significant numbers.
