Oswald (also known as Erol of Levi) is a mentioned-only character in Pillars of Eternity, and a character and recruitable crew member in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.

Background

Erol is an elderly Aedyran scholar, traveller, explorer, and veteran of the War of Defiance (for Dyrwood).

He was among the first of the Aedyran colonists to set foot in the Dyrwood. When it became evident that the Dyrwood intended to revolt, he took their side in the War of Defiance, and fought against his country of birth, alongside his friend Admeth Hadret.

After the war, in the early days of Dyrwoodan independence from Aedyr, Erol founded The Goose and Fox inn in Defiance Bay, as a place where kith of all backgrounds could gather and hash out the issues facing their new country. Although Erol prided himself on encouraging fair-mindedness and civil debate, he eventually found himself on the wrong side of an argument with the wrong thayn. His disappearance a few days later was widely speculated, with some claiming it was the work of a thayn, with others claiming he had been killed on his travels. Erol realized that discretion is the better part of valor and skipped town before things got ugly.

Since the betrayal of his homeland 150 years prior, Erol had drawn the ire of the Empire and its agents in The Steel Garrote, who were relentlessly hunting him down for his 'grave' transgression. Thus, with the money he made from his inn ventures, he fled to the Deadfire Archipelago, where he assumed the name "Oswald".

While in the Deadfire, he began to accumulate a sizable debt to house Kahn (a descendant of his friend, Admeth) in the services of a courtesan Aenalys in The Wild Mare. After absconding with her couple thousand pires, eventually the Steel Garrote caught up him, and he was captured and held on trial by its members, accused of oathbreaking.
