Mark van der Bij is a character in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
Background
You find a man of middle years inspecting a metal tool unlike any you've seen. He has several similarly strange items on his belt, all quite clean and orderly. They look like the tools one might use to pull a tooth or shoe a horse, but much more delicate.
He wears pristine, cream-colored robes. The man's robes shimmer with a faint trace of arcane energy. Glyphs stitched into the hems and sleeves seem to be the source of the effect. The muzzle of an arquebus is visible just over his shoulder. His eyes brighten when he notices you. Mark is a researcher in the medical sciences - not animancy, not necromancy, but actual medicine - and believes magic to be a crutch obstructing actual scientific progress. This makes him unpopular among most folk. Mark believes that this unpopularity led someone to assassinate his patient in order to discredit his work.
As such, he escaped into the Deadfire to pursue his work in peace and settled at Neketaka.
