The Goose and Fox is a tavern in Copperlane, Defiance Bay. It is owned by Bishop.

Background

The Goose and Fox was founded in the early days of Dyrwoodan independence by a traveling scholar named Erol of Levi. He wanted a place where kith of all backgrounds could gather and hash out the issues facing their new country. It didn't take long for the place to fill up. Brackenbury aristocrats argued with dock workers from the Gift while soldiers wrangled with politicians. Dyrwoodans have never been known to turn down an argument. Soon, kith were coming from the farms and settlements, attracting enough patrons that it rivaled The Salty Mast.

However, no free speech is free from consequences. Although Erol prided himself on encouraging fair-mindedness and civil debate, he eventually found himself on the wrong side of an argument with the wrong thayn. His disappearance a few days later is speculated to be either the work of the thayn or Erol realizing that discretion is the better part of valor and skipping town.

Now it's the domain of Bishop, a former scholar of Berath and recovered alcoholic who ensures everyone plays fair with his intimidating physique.

Points of interest

• The ground floor is divided into two halves, the common room with the counter and Bishop (plus numerous backer characters), with Kaenra sitting in the back, and a kitchen with a locked chest containing Bartender's Ring. The corridor running around the kitchen contains several alcoves for private discussion and meetings.
• The upper floor has Two-Tone Weaxel and his merry band of adventurers, as well as several rooms with minor loot (and several hundred coppers).

• Bishop: The owner and innkeeper. Provides rooms, food, and adventurers for hire.
• Kaenra: Starts the quest His Old Self.
• Two-Tone Weaxel: He and his four other companions (Dread-Shot Daedon, Hurdy, Ilfa and Key), are drinking on the second floor. They are involved in the task Something Secret.

• Gareth: The recipient for a package from Verzano.
• Danna Doemenel: A member of House Doemenel, she interrupts your deal with Gareth.

• The Goose and Fox inn is a backer reward for users on the NeoGAF forums, who together (led by user "shagg_187"), pledged $5,000 to the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to design an inn, an item (Bartender's Ring), and name an NPC (Bishop).
  • The name "Goose and Fox" was an idea by user OTIX, and forms the acronym "GAF".
  • The inn's founder, Erol of Levi, is named after NeoGAF owner Tyler "EviLore" Malka. Erol of Levi is a rough anagram of EviLore. Erol disappeared without a trace, which leaves the patrons to speculate over his whereabouts, who have claims of his travels all throughout Eora. This is likely an in-joke about EviLore's presence on the forum. Speaking to the patrons yields the following dialogue, in reference to Erol's fate:
    • "I heard Erol was taken prisoner for trespassing in the Ancenze Fortress."
    • "I was told Erol left the inn after falling in love with a woman from Selona."
    • "There are stories that Erol of Levi was assaulted by an aumaua one night and hasn't been seen again."
    • "They say Levi got lost in the mountains of White March was never seen again."
    • "Levi? I heard he was eaten by a stelgaer in Eir Glanfath."
    • "Levi struck it rich and lives like a king in the Deadfire Archipelago."
    • "Rumor has it that the original owner was on a ship that sank near Rauatai."
  • One of the user-selectable male portraits has EviLore's likeness (although this was purchased separately to the inn).
  • The name "Bishop" is a reference to a NeoGAF moderator Tim Lewinson aka "Bishoptl". The idea is credited to NeoGAF user "Corto".
  • An early version of the current sign was drawn by NeoGAF user "Jocchan", whose colours match those of the NeoGAF logo.
  • Much of the dialogue spoken by the inns patrons is in reference to heated discussions and debates of all varieties.

Since this inn belongs to a world traveller we made sure to decorate it with items from all over the different regions of the game. This included the stuffed Stelgaer in the corner that we lovingly named "Duke Bitey von Levi". Sadly, the dukes name did not make it into the final game, but he lives on in our hearts.
