Eld Aedyran (literally "old Aedyran") is an old dialect of the Aedyran language. While originating in the Aedyran Empire, it also can be found in Dyrwood and Readceras[1], but is considered a dead language, spoken by academics but not used in any major community.[2] Eld Aedyran words are often familiar to Aedyran speakers and readers, but the words use orthography that has since been abandoned.[2]
Eld Aedyran experienced its most dramatic changes when the Aedyr Kingdom joined with the elves of Kulklin. While many languages are the products of foreign invasion or occupation, Aedyran culture was more apt to shift speech and writing in order to accommodate contextual changes. To this day, scholars cite Eld Aedyran as evidence of their passion for cultural expansion.[1]
Phonology[ | ]
It uses most letters of the available alphabet, including the y notably absent from Glanfathan and Vailian, as well as j, q, v, and z which is absent from its modern counterpart. Accents are used to modify the duration of a vowel, but never to denote syllable stress or alter pronunciation—with the exception of the umlaut. Stress typically falls on the first syllable.[1]
- Ea creates an "ey-ah" sound that sounds like the colloquial salutation "heya!"
- Eo sounds like "ey-oh" - this sound is still used in the modern word "Eora."
- Ey is pronounced as "ey-ee" such as in "wraith."
- Ue and ü both create long "oo" sounds, as in "loop."
- Y sounds like a "ee" sounds as in "bee."
- Gj sounds like the consonant "y" as in "you."
