Crafting

Crafting is the process of making or enhancing of equippable items. In Pillars of Eternity you can make consumable goods (such as food, potions and scrolls) or enchantments for weapons, armor, and shields which makes them more effective in combat.

Crafting can be performed outside of combat at any time. To begin crafting, you must have the right level and required ingredients. The crafting interface displays all recipes, broken down into categories, highlighting those that meet all prerequisite requirements. In instances where the player has enough resources to craft multiples of the same item, this will be noted with an “x” followed by the maximum number of possible repeated craftings (e.g. x4).

Recipes

Recipes allow you to easily view the combination of ingredients needed to create or enhance an item. Most of them are available from the start (although most are initially not craftable due to higher level requirement), with some being obtainable from NPCs. Higher level recipes usually need rarer ingredients. Almost all of the crafting recipes are used to either create consumables or to add/upgrade properties on existing items.

Enchanting Recipes

Note: you can enchant any armor, weapon or shield, even uniques and magicals, but you can't change an existing enchanting type (Attributes, Proofed, Slaying...). However, Quality enchanting type is an exception, and you can just upgrade the quality enchanting of an object, not downgrade.

Unique Enchantments cannot be added. They appear only on found objects.

Materials

Main article: Materials

To craft or enhance an item, you must have the appropriate ingredients in your inventory. These materials may be bought, gathered, looted or salvaged. During the process the ingredients are usually used up, but sometimes they are reusable. And for recipes like enchantments, the main ingredient is not used up but is instead improved by the addition of a new bonus.

All enchanting is done using three ingredients: a critter part, a plant/herb, and a gem. The counts of each ingredient may vary, but there are always three ingredients. Additionally, there may be a copper cost that's subtracted directly from your total wealth.

Steel is by far the most common metal used for making armor and weapons.

Development history

In previous versions of the game during development, you could only craft at appropriate crafting location:

• Forges – these blacksmithing locations could be used to make all of the equippable gear.
• Labs – these alchemical tables were used to make any enchantments, as well as all alchemical consumables like potions, scrolls or figurines (which let you summon a creature that will fight for you).
• Hearths – these cooking spots were used to make food and drink that can give you long-term benefits when you ingest them.

During development, some recipes were said to have additional prerequisites, including requiring you or a companion to have a certain talent or ability or even skill at an appropriate level. You were initially to access new recipes through vendors, as loot during your adventures or as rewards for finishing quests. However, most of that was removed from the final version of the game, with level and ingredients remaining as the only requirements.
