Faith And Conviction is a paladin ability in Pillars of Eternity.

A paladin's Defenses are directly affected by the degree to which he or she acts in accordance with the beliefs of his or her order. A bonus or penalty is applied to Defense based on how well the paladin's Reputations align with his or her order's preferred behaviors.

  • +3 Fortitude
  • +3 Reflex
  • +3 Will

Bonuses[ | ]

The defense bonuses given by Faith and Conviction are scaled by the Watcher's dispositions, while for all other NPCs (including paladin companions such as Pallegina), it is only affected by level.

  • (NPCs only) Every 5 character levels (5, 10, 15, etc.) grants a bonus +2 to all defenses over the base.
  • (Watcher only) A multiplier is applied to the base value based on the ranks in the paladin order's favoured and condemned dispositions. See Disposition for more info.

Each rank in favoured dispositions gives a +0.2/+20% modifier, while ranks in the opposed dispositions give a -0.2/-20% modifier (caps at ±60% per Disposition). The modifier is calculated additively.

In the following table, ranks in the two condemned dispositions can be represented with a negative number (-1 for rank 1), and the ranks in the two favoured dispositions can be represented with a positive number (3 for rank 3). Only ranks up to 3 are used - rank 4 is simply treated as 3. Adding all four values together will produce a result from -6 (worst) to +6 (best), which can be multiplied by 20 to determine the percentage bonus.

Take for example, the disposition ranks of a Bleak Walkers paladin:

The total rank would be +3 (3 + 1 + -1 + 0), and resulting multiplier would be +60%. In this case this results in +12 to Fortitude, Reflex, and Will (8 + (8 * 0.6)), and +6 to Deflection (4 + (4 * 0.6)).
